Calling All Architects, Artists and Tower Builders!
We enjoyed learning at our last Enrichment Cluster meeting with Mr. Rob Norcross an Architect with Looney, Ricks, Kiss Architects. He shared photographs of projects that he has worked on here in Memphis like the FedEx Forum, Autozone Park, and the Memphis Central Library. Mr. Norcross also shared a new project that he is working on using buses as "mobile farmer's markets" to provide access to fresh vegetables and food to people throughout Memphis. St. Mary's first grader Annie Gowan shared blueprints from a recent renovation that she had done at her house and Mr. Norcross pointed out different design elements that it contained. We then had him give us tips about the structures that we built last week, discussing what made some of them stronger than others.

Welcome 2012
The new year is off to a fun start with lots of great activities including the gathering of the Third Grade Book Club and the continuation of our Enrichment Cluster groups that begin right before the Christmas break. The Book Club met to discuss some of our favorite characters in books. It is always such fun to share our thoughts about books and to give recommendations to our friends. I have made a Smilebox of photos from our lunch meeting and from the Enrichment Cluster that Ms. Falls and I are collaborating on with budding artists, architects and tower builders in 1st-4th grades. Enjoy!

Measurement Fun!
We had fun in the Think Tank today doing measurement activities to support a Second grade collaborative project between special subjects and the classroom teachers constructing kites. Here is a link to some of the online games that we did (I will also put the link in the "math resources" folder you can find by clicking on the tab at the top of this blog).

Happy New Year!!
Happy New Year! New beginnings are such fun and I look forward to learning with you all in 2012:) As a reminder the 3rd grade book club will meet this Friday (January 6th) during their lunch recess. Also see below a fun activity that you can do on a cold winter's day:
Create a cool Winter Weather Collage-
What You Need:
- Paper
- Pencil
- Old magazines
- Scissors
- Glue
- Construction paper
What You Do:
- Invite your child to write a short paragraph or poem about what winter means to her, or what she thinks about when the days get cooler. Encourage her to use lots of descriptive words to create a feeling or emotion for her winter writing.
- Now, offer her some magazines to look through for finding winter scenes. When she finds an image she likes, she can tear out the page to use for later.
- Once she has a stack of pictures to work from she can begin cutting out images from the magazine pages. Encourage her to cut as close to the outside edge of the object as possible encouraging her hand-eye coordination!
- While she's working, play some seasonal themed classical music, such as "The Four Seasons" by Vivaldi. Listening to music while creating encourages the brain to concentrate!
- A collage is a collection of images arranged in a free form or organized manor. Before gluing her cut images onto a sheet of 9 by 12-inch construction paper she can experiment with placement until she's satisfied.
- When she's ready, she can glue the winter images on her paper to finish the winter weather collage! Remember to help her print out her poem or paragraph to include in the finished creation!
This is a great activity to create some winter season decoration—she can tape it up to be seen or make it part of a scrapbook.
